Cap Sheet Roofing Systems

Cap Sheet Roofing

Cap sheet roofing is a particular method that allows our team of roofing professionals to install a water-tight surface on low slope roofing. This is commonly used on modified bitumen roofing and built-up roofing, two very common commercial applications. At Central Roofing Company, we understand that a well-installed roof can make all the difference to the success of a business. We handle the roofing so you can deal with more important things, like running your company.

Anatomy of a Cap Sheet Roof

A cap sheet is often created using asphalt or tar-coat over fiberglass layers. Several layers of these materials are combined and then coated with another strong material, such as mineral granules, in order to provide a protective layer. This provides the otherwise fragile material with strength and durability. The mineral surfacing is often light colored, a choice made usually for its ability to reflect heat and reduce heating and cooling costs.

Another recent feature often added to cap sheets includes rubber. This not only adds flexibility, it also increases durability and resistance to damage from weather-related problems, such as flying debris, hail, and powerful winds.

Over time, exposure to the wind and other elements can lead to brittleness and cracking in many different types of roofing systems, allowing water to seep down and cause damage to the interior portions of the building. When a cap sheet is utilized, it protects existing layers of roofing from the weather and damage, which extends the lifetime of the roof. This means that the cap sheet is the material that absorbs the UV rays, gets the beating from the rain, wind and hail, and prevents water from causing mold and rot. Essentially, it is the first line of defense for your roof.

Installation

A cap sheet is not simply laid on top of the other layers of roofing material. It is physically fused, so the roof becomes one complete unit. This makes it more impermeable to wind and rain, which increases the lifetime of the roof and leads to increased chances that the building won’t sustain a leak and resulting damages.

There are three top methods for installing a cap sheet. This includes:

Lap cement or asphalt – An extra material is added between the layers to create a strong, impermeable bond.

Heat welding – A torch is used to bond the sheets together and to the existing roofing system below by heating and allowing the materials to cool in place.

Gravel layer – A layer of gravel is often used in high-wind areas to help weigh down built-up roofs and prevent them or their individual components from blowing away.
